Do What You Love

What do you do?  That is a question I get a lot; the best answer would be, “What I love.”  That answer wouldn’t usually suffice for most people, so I usually answer that question with a simple title, “I’m a sales rep for a display fireworks company.”  Most people look at me with an odd look; it’s not every day you meet someone that works with display fireworks.  To tell you the truth, I’ve been trying to get into this business for about five years now.  Just recently everything has kind of fallen into place.  I don’t say all this to brag.  Actually, I tell you this because I think most people have ideas of what they want to do career wise, but don’t really know how to get there and end up giving up because they get so busy with other things.  There were times when I thought I would never get into display fireworks and thought that I might have to stick with just the retail side.  If you want something bad enough you can get it, it just depends how much you want to sacrifice.

Sacrifice

That’s a word most people don’t like to hear.  If I had to choose one word that best describes most entrepreneurs though, it would be sacrifice.  Sacrifice is something that isn’t popular in this instant gratification society we live in now.  There are the get quick business ideas that sell so well because of the promise that you’ll make multiple times over what you are making now just by reading someone’s book.  If you have found this website and are hoping we will/can tell you how to make millions over night, I’m sorry this is not it.  This is a site where we want to sit down, tell you our experiences and thoughts, and hear yours.  I believe that sacrifice is the one component that will make or break a new business.  The stories where people sacrifice a very nice paying job in order to do what they love is always refreshing.  The people that learn to sacrifice are the people that usually have great lives in the long run.  I had a professor that would always say, “Live today like no one does, so that later you can live like no one else.”  By that he meant, make the sacrifices now so that later on in life you can live the life everyone dreams of living.  I have never met a successful business man that at some point did not have to sacrifice something.  What are you willing to sacrifice?

Stick it to the man

As you may have noticed this post is in a category titled Stick it to the man.  Stick it to the man is a category where we will have posts about our experiences or ideas on how to stick it to the man.  Don’t you work for the man? Great question, yes I do, yet at the same time I have a business on the side.  Also, the reason I work for a company is to learn more about the industry.  Working for a company is not always a bad thing, if you love what you do, great.  Having something on the side is a great way to stick it to the man.  I’m not suggesting you quit your job and gamble everything on an idea.  I do recommend doing what you love, because you won’t regret something that makes you happy, but you will regret not doing something that would make you happy.  What are some ways you stick it to the man?  I look forward to talking with you and hearing your ideas.

I love your take on ‘sticking it to the man’. The idea that you can have a job while also sticking it to the man is something I’m hoping we discuss more in the future. If you can find a job that you absolutely love, how fantastic is that.

I think what makes this particular blog so fantastic is the fact that if you know David at all, you realize how much he comes through in this post. The genuineness of the style in which you write makes your personality come through for those of us who know you and now going to learn who you are. I am pleasantly surprised by the goodness of this post. I will be looking forward to your writing in the future!

I couldn’t have said it better myself. All I can think of as I read over this is the famous quote, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life!” Very Inspirational.
